Climate Savers Computing Initiative Appoints Executive DirectorPORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 10, 2008 – The Climate Savers Computing Initiative today announced the appointment of Pat Tiernan as executive director to oversee the Initiative’s global efforts to cut the energy used by computers in half. Mr. Tiernan joins Climate Savers Computing with more than 15 years experience in technology, most recently driving sustainability strategy and execution at HP; he plans to use this expertise to build on the strong momentum achieved by the Initiative in its first year. “In today’s challenging economic times, effective budgeting, energy efficiency and the resultant fiscal benefits are top of mind for anyone using computing technology,” said Pat Tiernan, the newly-appointed executive director of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. “I will be working with the Initiative’s broad range of members, supporters and affiliates to continue driving forward our mission to promote the adoption of energy-efficient computers and power management tools worldwide.” Before joining Climate Savers Computing, Mr. Tiernan served on the Initiative’s board of directors as a representative of HP. At HP, Mr. Tiernan was the vice president of Social and Environmental Responsibility, running the company’s sustainability programs. He joined HP in 1995 and has held a number of senior management positions in sales, marketing, product development/R&D and operations. Prior to joining HP, he helped launch a successful networking and software company and managed a global device business with an industrial technologies company where he developed and launched new products for automotive emissions compliance, patient monitoring and other commercial and consumer products. Mr. Tiernan holds a Masters in Science from California State Polytechnic University. “Pat is a proven leader and understands the challenges and complexities of tackling the problem of IT energy waste,” said Lorie Wigle, president of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. “Pat's expertise will take Climate Savers Computing to the next level of success, as the Initiative moves through its second year and continues rallying and guiding technology users around the globe as they address this important issue.” Strong momentum achieved by the Initiative in its first year
The Climate Savers Computing Initiative’s goal is to reduce global CO2 emissions from the operation of computers by 54 million tons per year, equivalent to the annual output of 11 million cars or 20 coal-fired power plants. Mr. Tiernan’s efforts will build on the Initiative’s momentum since its establishment in June 2007. During that time, the Initiative has grown its membership to more than 300 companies and organizations, published best practices for power management, completed its first round of technical specifications for more energy-efficient computers, and formed alliances with key organizations including the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Governors Association, the Green IT Promotion Council in Japan, and the China Electronics Energy Saving Committee. In a typical desktop PC, nearly half the power coming from the outlet never reaches the processor, memory, disks or any other computing components. The wasted electricity is dispersed as heat and increases the cost of powering a computer. Improving the energy efficiency of computers is a cost-effective way to reduce electricity consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Additionally, by enabling power management settings, computers and monitors can go into a low-power sleep mode after a period of inactivity, saving as much as $60 a year in energy costs per computer. Despite the significant savings, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, only five to 10 percent of U.S. organizations have deployed these settings on computers. About Climate Savers Computing

Climate Savers® Computing Initiative Cooperation with Green IT Promotion Council to be Expanded and Strengthened - Numerous Activities to be Undertaken in Japan to Promote Measures for Dealing with Climate Change The Climate Savers Computing Initiative today entered into a strategic collaboration with the Green IT Promotion Council to facilitate cooperation on accelerating the adoption of measures for dealing with climate change in Japan. The Memorandum of Understanding promotes international cooperation on action against climate change and is expected to lead to widespread measures associated with green IT.
