To participate in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, government organizations must commit to buying high-efficiency systems for a majority of their organization's PC and volume server computer purchases, and to using power-management tools on their existing PCs.
In November 2007, the National Governors Association (NGA) announced a clean energy partnership between the NGA Chair's Initiative Securing a Clean Energy Future and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative to spur deployment of more energy efficient computers and servers in state offices. Minnesota and Kansas were the first two states to join, followed thus far by Oregon, Colorado and Michigan. By joining, these states will reduce wasted electricity and electricity costs from state computer equipment by improving the overall power-efficiency of their computing infrastructure.
Affiliate membership is free and open to any type of organization. Together, we can achieve our goal of reducing computer power consumption by 50 percent by 2010. That represents a 54-million-ton reduction in global CO2 emissions from the operation of computers – which is equivalent to taking 11 million cars off the road!

The average desktop PC wastes nearly half the power delivered to it, as heat, and the average server wastes nearly a third of its energy – which translates into money lost and unnecessary environmental impact. Energy-efficient computers can cut energy bills by an average of $5 to $7 per system per year. Equally important, today's desktops and notebooks have power-saving capabilities built into them. "Sleep" and "hibernate" modes can reduce the overall amount of energy consumed by up to 60 percent.
